Join us in the studio with acclaimed Australian potter Jann Kesby in this immersive two-day workshop.

Known for her mastery of traditional wood firing and her uniquely expressive throwing techniques, Jann brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that will inspire and challenge potters of all levels.

Over two full days, participants will explore Jann’s personal methods of throwing off the hump, refining functional and sculptural forms with precision and flow. The workshop also delves deep into material understanding as Jann demonstrates how to create a clay body from raw materials—a rare opportunity to understand how to make your own clay body.

Each session combines demonstration, hands-on practice, and guided feedback in a small-group setting that ensures personal attention and a supportive learning environment.

Cathy Franzi is coming to Warrandyte following the Pottery Expo at Heide MOMA. Known nationally and internationally for her botanical imagery on ceramics she will be revealing her techniques at this very special workshop . Places are limited.

Learn to ‘draw’ onto the clay surface using textural imagery techniques including carving, sgraffito, incising, impressing, slip and ink inlay, stencils, water erosion relief, sponge stamping and slip trailing. In this comprehensive course you will learn each technique by practicing on slab tiles and explore mark making using various approaches to composition. Suitable for beginners with an interest in the materiality of clay and those more experienced who will extend their skills.

Dr Cathy Franzi is a ceramic artist based in Canberra. She holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Sydney and a Master of Visual Arts from the Australian National University. In 2015 she was awarded a PhD from the ANU School of Art & Design, the culmination of four years of intense research into the intersection of ceramic studio practice, botanical science and printmaking. Her interdisciplinary approach has led to numerous science-art projects including the prestigious ANU Vice-Chancellor’s College Artist Fellows Scheme in the Research School of Biology and the ‘Art of Threatened Species’.

Franzi has exhibited widely nationally, in Japan and in Germany as part of Berlin Design Week 2023. She has received many awards including First Prize in the Lanyon Art Prize 2025. Franzi’s work is held in public collections including Grassi Museum of Applied Arts in Leipzig, Shepparton Art Museum, Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery and Manly Art Gallery & Museum. She is the recipient of multiple grants including from Creative Australia, a former President of The Australian Ceramics Association, a member of the International Academy of Ceramics and is a sessional lecturer at the ANU.

8 white stoneware tiles will be provided for each participant to experiment with the many textural imagery techniques shown during the workshop. You can take these tiles home for firing.

Bring favourite tools and an apron. Some tools provided for use during the workshop.

Arrive at 9.30am for a coffee for a 10am start.
